Skating on Thick Ice.

Had work at 6am for the second day running today (was 7am prior the day before these too), so pretty tired when combining with the train + driving we’ve been doing. Think I’ll keep this short & sweet*!!!

Skating on Pyramid Lake

Headed out first thing after my shift towards Pyramid Lake (another recommendation from the Tourist Information man), for some short walks & skating. (It was bloody freezing again today, so didn’t fancy anything too strenuous!) When we got there we realized we’d left my ice skates, fortunately it was only 10 mins from the hostel so a quick pop back and we were off again – Take 2! 🎬

I jumped on the lake & attempted to skate. After a few minutes it started to groan & creak so I freaked out & ran back to the shore. (A quick Google later & I found out it was perfectly safe thanks to this handy article with added comfort from this one.) Anyway, it was stunning! After the skate we drove a few mins up the road and did a tiny walk onto Pyramid Island, where we chatted & took pics with a couple other hikers. (Main topic of convo: GoPro vs DJI Action)

Coffee at Jasper Park Lodge

We then headed to lake which the Tourist Info officer had circled on our map. We found Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge, where we stopped for a coffee & confirmed that it was safe to skate on this second lake as we were still a bit nervous (I hadn’t Google this yet). On the way we saw a coyote (which might actually have just been a fox) and some big Elk/Reindeer. We like to think the Elk-Deer where wild, but pretty sure they may have belonged to the lodge!

Skates back on & whoosh-whoosh-whoosh a few laps around the lake. (Etienne doesn’t have skates with him so he just walked and I actually skated the first lap at his walking speed, so not really whoosh, but ‘whoosh’ sounds cooler than pootled.)

Finally, we were gonna go see the sunset from the Old Fort hike. BUT some big old clouds rolled in and looked like they were here to stay, so instead we headed back, researched the cloud conditions (Cleardarksky & Windy both super useful for this) & decided we’d stay in for the night.

That’s basically it. We’ve eaten one of my fave easy meal, played some games and now off to finish the weird, but not entirely awful, film we started the other night: 7 years in Tibet.

*Short & Sweet = Long & Sweet it seems… rambled more than intended!
